HydroCon pipes key element of award winning
WSUD projects
 
 
HydroCon pipes featured in two projects, which won the Stormwater Industry Association (SIA) 2005 National Award for Excellence in Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD).
 
The Kiama CBD Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse and Elambra Estate (Gerringong) residential subdivision projects were submitted to the national SIA awards by Kiama Council and stormwater engineering consultants, Storm Consulting Pty Ltd.
 
The awards were presented at the Cities as Catchments - Water Sensitive Urban Design Conference in Adelaide in November 2004.
 
The projects were considered by the judges as representing leading edge water sustainability principles across the whole urban water cycle . . . "the projects demonstrate that Kiama Council has adopted WSUD in its fullest form as a central component of its stormwater planning and management in both new and existing areas."
 
In the case of both projects, Kiama Council was faced with a variety of constraints, including concerns about constructed wetlands. Storm Consulting overcame these constraints with the use of sand filters containing HydroCon pipes. The clever engineering solution proved cost effective and fully consistent with sustainable development principles.
 
Sand filters have much smaller land requirements than wetlands when used in WSUD applications and therefore allow higher lot yields. The incorporation of HydroCon pipe technology ensures a high level of performance. The choice of sand filters avoids the health, safety and maintenance concerns associated with constructed wetlands.
 
The Kiama CBD project (Black Beach Catchment Caretakers Project) has previously won other awards, notably:
  • Local Government Shires Association (LGSA) 2003 stormwater management category Award for Excellence in Environment - joint winner with Mosman Council of Division B (population 20,000 – 60,000)
  • Keep Australia Beautiful – 2003 Clean Beaches Litter Prevention Award and 2003 Tidy Towns Award - Waterways and Foreshore Protection
