ABOUT HYDROCON

Introduction

HydroCon Australasia offers solutions for Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), innovative water management and environmental protection by providing effective, high quality and sustainable products, which improve water quality, treat stormwater at source, facilitate infiltration, on-site retention and reuse, control drainage and reduce flooding. HydroCon products and systems have been installed in a wide range of applications in Australia, and have won numerous WSUD and stormwater industry awards.

HydroCon permeable concrete products

Why choose HydroCon

HydroCon products and systems are researched, designed and manufactured to provide outstanding results – both in water control and project outcomes. HydroCon systems provide substantial savings in infrastructure costs, are modular in design, easy to install, do not restrict land use, require little maintenance and have long life spans. Our systems are compatible with other measures or devices, performing well either as standalone systems or as part of treatment trains.

HydroCon’s technology is unique in Australia. Our permeable concrete products are strong and highly durable. HydroCon is the only manufacturer in Australia of permeable concrete pipes, while our HydroSTON fully permeable concrete paving units offer distinct advantages over other permeable paving forms. Unlike resin or other synthetic materials, permeable concrete continues to gain strengthen over time. With HydroSTON, we do not ‘cut corners’!

Our team is highly knowledgeable, providing expert advice and service to ensure your project achieves the best results.

A winning combination of German technology and Australian know-how

HydroCon products have been uniquely developed using German technology blended with Australian-specific research and manufacturing – resulting in products, which are ideally suited to local implementation.

Our products are based on extensive concrete and water technology research conducted over many years in Germany (approximately 25 million square metres of permeable paving systems are installed in Germany each year), which have been adapted and developed for Australian climate and rainfall conditions.

In Australia, HydroCon continues to engage in extensive research and development activities and has participated as an industry partner in research programs with University of Technology Sydney’s Faculty of Engineering and the University of South Australia’s Centre for Water Management and Reuse. Research focuses include hydraulic behaviour, pollutant retention, design, construction and maintenance.

Manufacturing and sustainability

HydroCon products, manufactured to special permeable concrete formulations, are proudly made in Australia. HydroCon pipes are manufactured in Mittagong (NSW), while HydroSTON pavers are manufactured in Cowra (NSW). Materials are sourced from local quarries, with transport costs and impacts important considerations.

Whilst the use of cement in HydroCon products has a beneficial effect (when more acidic stormwater containing heavy metals and phosphorus filtrates through the alkaline composition of the pavers, chemical reactions take place which assist in neutralising contaminants), lower impact material inputs are under constant assessment. HydroCon is investigating the use of lower carbon footprint binders as an alternative to cement and the substitution of sand with recycled glass sand. These substitutions may be possible if equivalent performances in terms of strength and permeability can be achieved.

HydroCon products

HydroCon products utilise the abilities and inherent qualities of permeable concrete – improving water quality, treating stormwater at source, facilitating on-site retention and reuse, control discharge and reduction of flooding.

HydroSTON® Pavers

HydroSTON Paver HydroSTON® permeable pavers are available for pedestrian, traffic and industrial applications. Fully permeable HydroSTON pavers can be used for a wide range of purposes including:

  • taking pressure off stormwater systems
  • reducing untreated stormwater run-off
  • improving water quality
  • replenishment of groundwater and aquifers
  • irrigation and root aeration to trees and landscaped areas
  • harvesting of stormwater
  • improvement of urban micro climates

HydroCon® Pipes

HydroCon Pipes HydroCon pipes provide an innovative approach to treatment and management of stormwater. The University of Technology Sydney confirmed in a long term study that HydroCon pipe systems are able to remove most stormwater pollutants through processes of sedimentation, absorption and chemical precipitation.
